Excerpts from the preface by David Rosenberg

In light of the audacity, the irony, the creativity, the energy and the plastic power of the works presented here, we can therefore legitimately express our astonishment over the fact that this “Chinese photography scene” – as multifarious and complex as this exhibition shows it to be – has not yet achieved recognition for what it really is: one of, if not the most experimental and lively scenes today.

The wave of Political Pop, “cynical realism” and Gaudy Art has passed. The media and the market are now focused on a limited group of artists whose works have come to command stratospheric sums. Some of these so-called avant-garde artists have become members of the establishment or even celebrities about town; one might cross paths with them in posh clubs, in the front row at fashion shows, or at fancy soirées and galas. This all happened so quickly, and with such confusion, that it was difficult to step back and see it objectively.
