Les photographies mises en scène de Wang offrent un aperçu surréaliste de son souvenir imparfait du passé, de ses rêves et de ses idées, et de ce que nous considérons comme une «réalité». À l’instar d’un réalisateur de cinéma, il utilise des «acteurs», des décors et des éclairages pour élaborer des scénarios familiaux mélancoliques. Ses modèles sont généralement chargés de garder les yeux fermés, ajoutant une couche supplémentaire de mystère. Les récits photographiques ambigus de Wang Ningde brouillent le passé et le présent; La figure centrale de beaucoup de ces photographies, un homme vêtu d’une minable combinaison de Mao, est un narrateur peu fiable, à qui il ne faut pas entièrement se fier.
Wang Ningde est né dans la province du Liaoning en 1972. Diplômé du département de photographie de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lu Xun en 1995, il vit et travaille actuellement à Pékin.
